As we did last year, we will be
personally delivering stockings stuffed with gifts and new toys to Pediatric
Oncology patients and have expanded our gift-giving to various locations for
children in-need throughout San Mateo County. We’ve added a new feature for
accepting online gift donations where you can pick the type of gift you’d like to “purchase” from our Gift
Tree!

PLEASE HONOR JULIANA AT THIS YEARS EVENT IN WASHINGTON DC!! $5 PER AWARENESS RIBBON AND YOU CAN ORDER AS MANY AS YOU WANT - YOU CAN HAVE THEM MAILED BACK TO YOU AFTER THE TREE IS TAKEN DOWN.
Each year during the December holiday season, a 25 foot tree is solely decorated with thousands of gold ribbons (the symbol for childhood cancer). Each ribbon bears the name of a child who has, or has had cancer. Time is given to all families attending the event to come to the podium to pay tribute to their child who was diagnosed with cancer.
Thousands of gold ribbons are ordered by families every year, and our dedicated volunteers make each ribbon by hand. Each ribbon represents a childhood interrupted or even cut short by cancer, so we take great care to treat every single one with the respect it deserves. Many families ask for their ribbons to be returned each year, so these golden symbols are removed from the tree and mailed to their families in January.
The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting unites
family and friends around the globe in lighting candles for one hour to honor
the memories of the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren who
left too soon. As candles are lit at 7:00 p.m. local time, hundreds of
thousands of persons commemorate and honor the memory of all children gone too
soon.
Now believed to be the
largest mass candle lighting on the globe, the 17th annual Worldwide Candle
Lighting, a gift to the bereavement community from The Compassionate Friends,
creates a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time
zone. Started in the United States in 1997 as a small internet observance,
but has since swelled in numbers as word has spread throughout the world of the
remembrance. Hundreds of formal candle lighting events are held and thousands
of informal candle lightings are conducted in homes as families gather in quiet
remembrance of children who have died, but will never be forgotten.
